A Sneak Peek into Hunter Douglas Window Treatments & Interior Decorating Trends for 2021

, , , , ,

We are all excited to put 2020 behind us, yet this unprecedented time in our lives also brought forward some inspirational home trends in design, living spaces, past-times and even our window coverings.  We have brought forward our heritage and back-to-basics mindset to create our sense of calm and peace.  Our world pandemic has almost instigated our need to have our home as our refuge for peace and serenity. We are not able to travel or sometimes even go to work, so our homes have become multi-functional spaces and we want these areas to feel updated, clean of clutter and invigorating.  The forecasted design trends by Hunter Douglas can be seen also in our Calgary and area window coverings.  Let’s have a peek!

An Increased Need for Comfort and Serenity

There is a global demand for comfort and relaxation, mindfulness and serenity.  We need our personal spaces to feel inviting, to wrap us in comfort when we come home.  With home baked bread and traditional crafts being relearned and taught (yes, I relearned crocheting in this pandemic), we will also see textiles with a soft hand, cushy, cozy blankets and softer textiles.

Adorn your living room with custom toss cushions with a soft velvety texture in calming color such as a hazy blue or light rose and bring the windows to a warm glow with a soft linen drapery paired with a refined weave in a Provenance® Woven Wood Shade.

Or, if you want something more minimalist, consider a Designer Roller Shade in a shimmery pearl paired with warm earth toned side panels with a metallic bronze or copper finish in your hardware. It’s an opportunity to bring nature and calm back into your home.

Color Sets the Tone and Feeling

Color communicates mood and sets the tone for your space – it is what you FEEL.  The quickest way to change a room’s mood is to paint!  2021 will see the resurgence of the earth tones with taupes, browns and greiges.  Add a hit of color with blues, wines and golds; sagey greens and light pinks and rose provide a sense of softness and calm.

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2021 is projected to be classic blue hues which is carried forward from 2020.  This color communicates serenity, calm (think water) and authenticity.  Check out our Paint Consultations to learn more about how you can harness the power of color in your Calgary & area home.

Our tried and true denim jeans that we are most comfortable in becomes the predominant hit of color for a trendy 2021. Want to add this to your window coverings – how about a Hunter Douglas Pirouette® in a dark Hazy blue with a bit of shimmer undertones, throw in some velvety toss cushions in a metallic gold with antique gold side lamp.  For more saturation of color for a cozy warm mood add some drapery panels in a deep wine silk with chunky black hardware.

With our back-to-basics mindset we are connecting with nature inside our homes.  Our work days can be spent in our home and we have been thrown into a hyper-digital world– bringing nature inside provides us with a refuge amongst the blue-light of the zoom calls and computer screens.

Create a Tropical Oasis

We will see more biophilic patterns, an obsession with plants, botanical wall art and lots of lush green tones in accent colors.  How do you add this to your window dressings?  How about bringing in a Designer Roller shade with a botanical leaf print or in a grainy wheat pattern.  Maybe you can see a bold Jungle-like pattern in drapery side panels with a Provenance® Woven Wood in a natural braided seagrass texture to remind you of the lush tropics.

Perhaps you prefer to tilt your blinds and want a wood slat like the Hunter Douglas Parkland® Wood in a bleached oak.   Add in some ocean-like blues, bright yellow golds and bold cherry reds and you have a personal refuge reminiscent of your tropical oasis.

2021 will also see lots of creativity, abstract prints and 3-D statements.  We will play with proportions, illusions and opacity.  Think back to the 80’s with the geometric designs that changed depending on your focus – we are bringing the nostalgic prints back.  We will see this in our wallpaper, fabrics and art.  Vibrant canvases will be hung on the wall sparking our creative, playful side.

Take a Minimalist Approach

When our walls and art are playful and abstract maybe we would like our window coverings to have a more minimalist approach and let the light in – try the Hunter Douglas Pirouette®, a dramatic play of light than can enhance your playful interior.  Perhaps you prefer the minimalist approach with a top down bottom up Duette® in a soft hue to blend away with your trim so the dramatic art and geometric fabrics can take front stage.

Another key word for the upcoming year is sustainability – we are bringing back the old – shabby chic vintage furniture pieces are placed in a modern setting.  Unique older items like old trunks and old sewing machine tables are being reused and repurposed for end tables and coffee tables.  We are focusing on recycling our trash to save the planet for our next generation. But how do we practice sustainability in window coverings?

A Sustainable Approach to Designer Shades

Make an Inspired, Fresh Start in 2021

We are spending an unforeseen amount of time in our homes with the current global situation.  Our homes have become our refuge and our work space.  We are searching for a sense of calm and serenity within our four walls.  But don’t forget the glass – the windows!  We can play with light, bring in shimmer and warmth, natural textures, metallics and playful prints.  Woven Woods, Soft refined drapery, playful Silhouettes®, Designer Roller Shades and dramatic Pirouettes® will take center stage in 2021.
